ok, this ruined it for me. i adored Zach before this. but now, put him in the catagory of "tarnished good guys gone bad"

they pitch it as temptation cause of the uncertantity of the changing relationship (his girfriend gets pregnant). so he meets a hot co-ed at a wedding and even after he admits he has a girlfriend, she continues to pursue him (offers her number, invites him to college partys & dances)
OK?? no matter what angle you have on this one, SHE's A SLUT! and you cave into that, you're a fucking cheating asshole.

(Unless you count Terry Bradshaw naked on a 40-ft screen for FAR too many minutes as something "special") ... was a little distracted by the whole "rejected by nature" sub-context that they were throwing in just for comedic purposes.

The roommate of Sarah Jessica Parker was ... tasty.

Sarah wasn't looking that good... I mean, it's sad when a straight guy (like myself) looks at the screen & thinks Matthew McConnahy is a pretty actor than the lead actress. (*chuckling*)

... ironically, when I got home from this movie, CBS in Los Angeles was playing "How To Lose a Guy in 10-Days" - ALSO with Matthew McConnahy.

On a flight from Los Angeles to New York, Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet make a connection, only to decide that they are poorly suited to be together. Over the next seven years, they are reunited time and time again, they go from being acquaintances to close friends to more. but why does geography, timing & modern guy-girl shtuff always keep gettin in the way? uhh, cuz there wouldn't be a movie otherwise?

cute trailer - now i feel like i've seen the whole movie. and it doesn't bode well when the focus of their PR campaign has been kutcher's modesty sock. i don't have high expectations (relatable & tepid) so i'll probly really like it on cable. soundtrack should skyrocket though

it's my mom's favorite movie of all time- she's watched it so often. i just hadn't seen it until two nights ago because... it's almost six hours long.

but i sat down to watch the first part (it's in six parts). it was so wonderful that i had to watch it... and i was done at 4am. it's that good!

if you like jane austen type period piece movies, get this one. i guarantee you won't be disappointed.... *sigh* i would watch it again, but i have like, responsibilities n stuff. oh well... this movie has put me in a british period piece mood again. time to dig out emma and sense and sensibility...

I just watched it again after seeing it around the time it was originally released and I'm so glad I watched it. In fact, it's right up there near the top of my All Time Favorite Movies list, perhaps in a tie for #1 with a couple other things, and I'm not really one to pick favorite anythings generally.

Anyhow, if you've never seen this movie and you're in the mood for a really unusual love story, I highly recommend it.

Somehow Meryl Streep managed to make a love affair with a guy who has no front teeth very sexy, though I'm sure Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jones ought to get some credit, too..

When her husband abruptly leaves, a sharp-witted suburban wife and her daughters juggle family dynamics and romantic dilemmas. will her bitterness keep her from enjoying a romance with her equally embattled neighbor.

i'm echoing the critics here: great performance vehicle! Joan Allen(perfectly cast, imo), Kevin Costner (winningly satires himself, a la nicholson), evan rachel wood (she's such a natural, it's almost creepy), all the other daughters, mike binder (the director amps up his usual lech, but without the golden heart. ok his acting was so-so)

anger + good dialogue = cracklin scenes. the anger theme is overdone, but it's succesfully balanced with wit. it's just so rare to see a romance between articulate superflawed (but cute of course) *middle-aged* leads. when gorgeous 20-somethings say they've given up on love, i laugh but for the wrong reasons. and i haven't seen an alcoholic couple portrayed funny since dudley moore.

not all the mother-daughter relationships worked, but the girls were a fine chorus for her turmoil.

with sandra bullock et al bowing out of romcoms, everything's being offered to hillary duff. let's support adult romcoms. go see it!

Truly a romantic comedy at it's best. We discuss all the time who we think should play the different roles if the books become movies. Which I don't know how that could happen because poor Steph's cars blow up or are else destroyed at an alarming rate. :)

Caught this 1939 Clark Gable/Norma Shearer "anti-war romcom" curiosity last night/early this morning on TMC. A little research on the Internet[s] confirmed my suspicion that the piece was originally a stage play (adapted by the playwright no less). It has all the claustrophobic trappings of a filmed play including stagey entrances that conveniently overlap exits.

Gable plays Harry Van, an often-unemployed song-and-dance man touring Europe with a posse of blonde bombshells. Rumors of war strand Harry and his girls at an Alpine hotel where they meet a group of similarly displaced travelers that includes a Russian Countess (Shearer) who may or may not be the same eccentric Vaudevillian acrobat with whom Gable had a brief yet unforgettable affair ten years earlier in Omaha.

Zingy romcom banter clashes with earnest anti-war speechifying (a la Burgess Meredith, on a mission to preach peace). Only occasionally does the contrast work. However, Shearer's larger than life turn as the Countess is a bit much. Her booming voice, bad Russian accent and forced, theatrical gestures play like a train wreck -- it's hard to look away, but that doesn't mean her scenery-chewing works. (I kept thinking the part would have been perfect for a young Madeline Kahn.)

In contrast, Gable delivers charm, charisma and immaculate comic timing with gymnastic precision and expertise. He even sings and dances and not badly. Interesting to note that 1939 was the same year his other movie was released in which he played against Vivian Leigh. For my money, this was the more skillful performance.

Most impressive are those moments where Gable is utterly effortless, even sublimely subtle, particularly as he quietly observes the Countess to compare her with the woman he fell in love with many years ago.

Despite the movie's many flaws and unevenness, I found myself completely charmed, swept away and moved. An alternate, more "hopeful" domestic ending played at the movie's conclusion but paled in comparison to the more poignantly bittersweet international version.

I (and my theater company) have a movie question –what do you like about romantic comedies? And what do you dislike?

I ask because we are putting on an improvised romantic comedy in San Francisco. Each night we basically make up a romantic comedy plot on stage, which is not as hard as it sounds, because (sad to admit) our own love lives are ridiculous.

Obviously, we want to capture what people like about romantic comedies (and maybe discard what they hate). Any thoughts? We have our own ideas, but it would be nice to hear from other folks.

And by the way, if anyone wants to see the show (which starts April 1, that's tomorrow), there is information on our un-scripted tribe or at www.un-scripted.com

Which tagline would draw you more to watch a romantic drama?

Does "affair" imply an extramarital situation? Would "love affair" be better or do you have another suggestion that also means "relationship"?

I'm doing P.R. for an independent film about a couple that breaks up but still finds excuses to stay in each other's lives. I'd like to evoke a universal emotional experience, like wondering if you let The One get away, or being helplessly in love with someone you know is wrong for you (while still setting a romantic tone)

If you have any other suggestions for taglines, please help! I'm totally new to this but it's fun. Thanks o:-]
Plot:
Can a risk-averse insurance salesman on the rebound from his bride's infidelity (during their honeymoon) find happiness with a waitress he knew in junior high who's averse to commitment? Reuben is a sweet klutz who's ready to settle down but sees in her a chance to recover from disappointment and have some fun; Polly is a sweet itinerant, not ready to settle down but sees a chance to spend time with a nice guy who likes her. What will he do when his bride comes crawling back? What will Polly do, when he runs the numbers and thinks she's a good risk? Sub-plots involve his self-centered pal, who's a has-been actor, and an assignment to assess the insurability of a balls-out Aussie.

If humor is based on pain/humiliation, then that explains why this ultimate embarassing 1st date story would be the most hilarious romcom scene.

This was on the “Tonight Show ”with Jay Leno. Jay went into the audience to find the most embarrassing first date...

Marilyn said it was midwinter …and the guy had taken her skiing to Lake Arrowhead for the day. No overnight - Marilyn's not that kind of woman. The outing was fun but uneventful until they were headed home. They were driving back down the mountain when she realized that she shouldn't have had the extra latte. They were the middle of nowhere, an hour away from a rest room! Her date suggested she try to hold it, which she did for awhile.

Because of heavy snow and slow going, there came a point where she told him that he had better stop and let her pee beside the road, or it would be the front seat of his car. They stopped and she crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and started.

Unfortunately, in the deep snow she didn ’t have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself. Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and was a real gentleman.

She finished, bent to pull up her pants, and felt a new sensation. Her buttocks were firmly glued to the fender! Thoughts of tongues frozen to pump handles immediately came to mind as she tried to disengage her flesh from the icy metal.

Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor, she answered her date ’s concerns about “what was taking so long ”with a reply that indeed, she was “freezing her butt off" and needed some assistance!

He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater. As she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing. She got the giggles too and when they finally composed themselves, they assessed her dilemma. As hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem. Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks.

There was only one way to get her free. As she looked the other way, her first time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender!

As for the Tonight Show …she took the prize hands down …or “pants down. ”And you thought your first date was embarrassing. Leno ’s comment - “This gives a whole new meaning to being 'pissed off'."

OUCH! WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS: DID THEY HAVE A SECOND DATE? And have the Farelly Brothers heard of this?

got me thinkin about the "happily ever after" expectation in romcoms and all those guys who gagged at Garden State "sellout." Some of my favorite love stories (not necessarily comedic) don't end with the main couple smooching off into the rain. What are yours?

"spoiler alerts" for the whole thread...

Roman Holiday - raise your hand if you thought Princess Audrey Hepburn was gonna call Cary Grant back or run away with him again. Notting Hill didn't dare try this ending.

Manhattan - Woody & Diane break up, and he goes back to the teenage muriel hemingway. even before soon yi, i thought i should call child welfare, but somehow felt this was the sweetest ending.

Still now after 10 years of watching it at least once a year. The struggles seem so real....and that is were it got me....
Anyways I'll drop in on occation to say hey and read up but, I try and stay off this tribe thang cause without fail I'm on for hours at a time. This for me as a student is VERY BAD! Bad monkey I say!
